One Man’s Trash is Another’s Treasure

The two Madison High School graduates, Costilla and Buitron, has set up their own shop at Market Square. The saying that one man’s trash is another’s treasure is exactly the basis of their business. Actually, what was once a hobby has become a new business venture. The two have met with a local beer distributor in hopes of getting more supplies and want to get their hats officially licensed. It wasn’t long ago that Costilla and Buitron were drinking all the beer that came in the cardboard boxes. Then people began wanting hats quicker than they could drink the beer. So they started staking out festivals in the area that sold canned beer. They thought the product that was being sold is a win-win, just as what Costilla had said, “We intercept (the boxes) before they hit the dumpster”. Their cowboy hats serve as free advertising for beer brands, and they're reusing cardboard that at best would be recycled and at worst would end up in a landfill. Costilla has high hopes for the business. He wants to expand into custom hats made by printing various images — family photos, business logos and other things — onto adhesive paper.

Environmentalists And Industry Come to Blows Over Plastic Bags

Recently, campaigns against disposable plastic shopping bags due to their environmental impact have achieved new success. The major win was scored in August, when California lawmakers passed the first statewide ban on the plastic bags. But just as predicted, the plastic bag industry will surely fight back, according to a news in Chemical & Engineering News.

Alexander Tullo, a senior correspondent with C&EN reported that dating back to 1990, the year when the anti-bag campaign logged its first small victory, a lot of cities and counties have followed suit to curb the use of single-use bags. However the bag industry has developed into a staggering number nowadays, which is difficult to dispose them appropriately. Just as the environmentalists say, they end up littering the land and the water, potentially harming wildlife. Out of this consideration, experts of environmental protection suggest citizens using customized bags that is made of polyester fabric or other materials and available for cycle use.

The plastic bag industries however have raised up their confusion, pointing out that environmentalists and the media exaggerate the potential harm bags can cause. They also predict a terrible economic loss a universal ban would bring, such as unavoidable widespread unemployment etc.
